  • President Trump told the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan and Turkey on May 23 that joining the Abraham Accords to establish diplomatic relations with Israel should be mandatory as part of negotiations to end the war with Iran.
  • The U.A.E. has already reaffirmed its security ties with the U.S. and Israel after Iran targeted it with more than 2,800 drones and missiles during the war, more than any other target.
  • Saudi Arabia has said it would only agree to the Abraham Accords if there were a clear pathway toward a Palestinian state, and Qatar has no plans to join.
  • Gulf analysts said leaders have grown increasingly distrustful of both the U.S. and Israel, fearing that normalization with Israel would further antagonize Iran.
  • Trump suggested he might not sign an Iran deal if the other states do not join the Abraham Accords, and said envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were speaking to regional leaders about normalization.

Gunfire erupts at Philippine Senate during effort to arrest ICC-wanted senator
  • Law enforcement agents attempted to detain Senator Ronald dela Rosa inside the Philippine Senate late Wednesday when a burst of gunfire erupted in the building.
  • Interior Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla Jr. said authorities were deployed to secure the legislative chamber and stated he did not come to arrest the senator, who remains inside the complex.
  • Senate President Alan Cayetano told reporters that emotions were running high in the plenary and said the building was allegedly under attack.
  • The International Criminal Court unsealed a warrant on Monday accusing dela Rosa of the murder of at least 32 people during his leadership of the national police force under former President Rodrigo Duterte.
  • Senator dela Rosa has vowed to face any allegations before Philippine courts and urged his supporters to gather at the Senate on Wednesday to block his transfer to The Hague.
