  • Annabella Gyasi, a 38-year-old pregnant woman from Ghana, and her young son were held for more than a week in a windowless detention room at Washington Dulles International Airport after arriving with valid visas, and have been ordered deported.
  • The two traveled on valid visas for a medical appointment related to the boy’s severely malformed hands, but were detained after Gyasi told immigration officers they had faced persecution in Ghana and feared returning, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia.
  • Gyasi was hospitalized twice during the detention for pregnancy complications, including vaginal bleeding and high blood pressure, the ACLU said.
  • After the hospitalizations, Gyasi felt she had no choice but to agree to leave the United States, her lawyers said.
  • ACLU Virginia Executive Director Mary Bauer called the conditions “inhumane” and said “no one should be subjected” to what Gyasi and her son endured.
