The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Thursday approved full funding for the renovation of the General Services Administration headquarters, according to the agency. The approval, which the GSA announced Monday, unlocks the agency’s plan to renovate its building at 1800 F Street NW in Washington after it was declared largely uninhabitable.
“This will pave the way for a high-quality and dynamic federal campus, setting a new high watermark for building design,” GSA Administrator Edward C. Frost said in a statement. “Once completed, 1800 F will inspire excellence, connect people, and elevate the way GSA delivers for the American taxpayer.”
GSA employees have been working from the Theodore Roosevelt Federal Building, which also houses staff from the Office of Personnel Management. Under the renovation plan, both GSA and OPM employees will move into the renovated headquarters once it is completed, the agency said.
The GSA’s original headquarters was inspected in 2021 over concerns about indoor air quality. The following year, inspectors found that the building’s child care center was not receiving adequate fresh air when outdoor temperatures dropped below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Ultimately, 40% of the building was determined to be uninhabitable, according to the GSA.
The agency initially estimated the renovation would cost $239 million and be completed in 2031. Under the approved plan, the project will still carry a $239 million price tag but is now scheduled for completion in December 2028, the GSA said.
