The Puyallup Police Department, which recently moved into a new Public Safety facility, announced May 30 that personnel had discovered a mother bird had built a nest and laid four eggs in an unorthodox location: the storage compartment of a not-in-service motorcycle used for traffic officer training.
On Sunday, the department posted an update on social media that the mother — whom officers nicknamed Traffic Birdie — had successfully hatched two of the eggs.
“Mama bird has been doing an incredible job taking care of her little ones, keeping them warm, fed and safe inside their very unique nest at our new Public Safety facility,” the department’s post said. “Our officers and staff have been carefully watching from a respectful distance as this feathered family continues to grow.”
Police said further updates would be made available as the chicks grow and as the remaining two eggs potentially hatch, leading to more “officers-in-training.”
