The 79th Tony Awards, broadcast from Radio City Music Hall, recognized a range of productions across musical and play categories. “Schmigadoon,” the satirical musical based on a TV series, won four awards: Best Original Score, Orchestrations, and Book of a Musical in addition to Best Musical. The production is backed by Lorne Michaels, who also produces “Saturday Night Live.”
In the revival categories, “Ragtime” received three awards, including Best Actor in a Musical for Joshua Henry and Best Actress in a Musical for Caissie Levy. “The Lost Boys” earned four awards: Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Ali Louis Bourzgui, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Shoshana Bean, and awards for Scenic Design and Lighting Design of a Musical.
Among plays, “Death of a Salesman” won Best Revival of a Play, and Joe Mantello won Best Director of a Play for his work on the production. Laurie Metcalf won Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her performance, and Alden Ehrenreich won Best Supporting Actor in a Play for “Becky Shaw.” John Lithgow won Best Actor in a Play for “Giant,” and Lesley Manville won Best Actress in a Play for “Oedipus.”
Pink hosted the ceremony. Leslie Odom Jr. performed “Without You” from “Rent” during the “In Memoriam” segment, honoring figures such as Robert Duvall, Robert Redford, and Diane Keaton, who died in the past year.
