The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that Graham Platner, a military combat veteran who was a political unknown less than a year ago, has vaulted to the front of Maine’s Senate primary race entirely outside the Democratic Party’s established channels. The Journal’s report identified three independent activists — Daniel Moraff, Leanne Fan and Morris Katz — as the organizers who handpicked Platner and then built his campaign.
According to the Journal, the activists are recruiting working-class candidates across the country to promote an economic-populist agenda. Platner’s own platform calls for higher taxes on the wealthy and a government-funded healthcare system covering all Americans.
The Journal described Platner as a powerful messenger for that agenda, but noted that a series of controversies — including leaked text messages and an abuse accusation — have made him a volatile candidate. The report characterized Platner as one of the most significant risks the Democratic Party is carrying into the 2026 midterm elections, when control of the Senate is at stake.
