Five people were injured and a suspect is in custody after a mass stabbing at New York’s Penn Station on Sunday evening, officials said.
The attack occurred around 7 p.m. EDT in the Manhattan transit hub that serves hundreds of thousands of commuters daily. New York Police Department, Fire Department of New York and Amtrak officials confirmed to local media that five victims were hospitalized after a male suspect allegedly attacked passersby with a sharp object.
One victim suffered serious injuries, two were hurt less seriously and two others sustained minor injuries, officials said. All were taken to a nearby hospital. Police subdued the suspect at the scene, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to amNewYork.
Witnesses described a heavy emergency response, with ambulances and police cars crowding Penn Station and the surrounding area at 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue.
The stabbing came at a tense moment for the city. President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden, which is adjacent to Penn Station, on Monday. Officials said Trump’s presence will generate a massive security presence around the transit hub and surrounding streets, including the cancellation of a scheduled watch party in the streets outside the arena.
MSI previously reported that an April 12 stabbing attack unfolded along a similar transit-adjacent pattern when police fatally shot a machete-wielding man who stabbed multiple people at Grand Central Terminal, the city’s other major rail hub. The back-to-back incidents in Manhattan’s two busiest transit stations highlight security challenges in spaces that are both high-traffic public infrastructure and venues for high-profile events.
No motive has been disclosed, and police have not publicly identified the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
