Sean Reifel, a former police officer in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, resigned from the force to appear on the Peacock reality series Love Island USA, a spinoff of the popular UK show. The decision, announced last week when Reifel was introduced as a cast member, has become a lightning rod in the city of 75,000 residents.
Mayor J. William Reynolds expressed frustration over the departure, which came less than a year after Reifel was sworn into the department in August 2025.
“I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer,” Reynolds told Fox8. “Our police department spent a lot of time training and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” he said. The mayor added that the vacant position cannot be filled until next year.
Police Chief Michelle Kott told the BBC that while the department respects Reifel’s decision, she acknowledged her disappointment at losing an officer. “I would be less than candid if I didn’t acknowledge my disappointment in losing another police officer,” Kott said. She noted that with Reifel’s resignation, the department now has 16 officer vacancies. “Law enforcement agencies across the United States continue to face significant recruiting and retention challenges, and every vacancy affects our organization and the community we serve,” Kott added.
The drama has stirred discussion among Bethlehem residents. Kristine Ruff, a small business owner who lives in the area, said the news came up at a local hair salon. “Oh my God, did you hear? One of the contestants is from Bethlehem. He’s a cop,” she recounted the salon owner saying. Ruff told the BBC she texted her sister, who replied, “Yeah, we were just talking about it.”
Ruff noted that residents are “sending the show clips from Instagram to each other, saying, like, ‘Can you believe that it’s a local guy that’s on the show?’” While she expressed mixed feelings about the reason for the national attention, she said, “If it gets more people to learn about this pretty part of the country, then I’m OK with that.”
Opinions on a local Facebook group appeared divided. One resident wrote, “This is such a great opportunity for him. I understand the older people think it’s silly (and that’s OK), but this little appearance could potentially set him up for life!” Another resident criticized Mayor Reynolds, saying, “Truthfully the mayor should be ashamed of himself. The fact that this man put his life on the line for HIS city and then be criticized… don’t criticize a man who has kept us safe.”
Others were less supportive, with some arguing their tax dollars had helped train him. One person said the show’s content was not “becoming of a police officer.” Another remarked on work ethic: “I doubt any police department anywhere is gonna put any more energy into him after what he did to his previous department.”
Reifel’s family took to social media to defend him. His sister, Brice Marie, said the city could have used his appearance as an opportunity to “connect with the community, generate positive publicity for the town, and help improve perceptions of law enforcement.” Instead, she said, officials “chose a response that will likely reinforce the stereotypes they should be working to change.”
Reifel’s mother, Beth Reifel Bow, said statements by city leaders that they paid for his police academy training were inflated. She said Reifel had worked as an officer before moving to Bethlehem and had some prior training. “I’m not saying they didn’t do any training, but they also weren’t fully honest about all the details,” she said.
In the season premiere, Reifel talked about his work as an officer, saying, “You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that.” He also recounted a story about being called “officer sexy pants” by a community member, which he said was “a hit at work” — a remark the mayor cited as evidence that the department “may have different standards now than we used to.”
The starting salary for a Bethlehem police officer is just under $70,000 (£52,000), according to the department’s website. Love Island USA contestants compete for a $100,000 grand prize, though the show is also known for generating lucrative influencer deals for participants.
