Jason Collins spent 13 seasons in the NBA across six franchises. In 2013, he revealed he was gay, becoming the first openly gay player in the league, the AP reported. The announcement came near the end of his playing career. Collins went on to become an advocate for inclusion. Shortly before his death, he received the inaugural Bill Walton Global Champion Award at the Green Sports Alliance Summit but was too ill to attend; his twin brother, former NBA player Jarron Collins, accepted on his behalf.
