Seven people died in a series of shootings at multiple locations across Muscatine, Iowa, on Monday — six victims and the suspected gunman — in what the Muscatine Police Department said preliminary findings indicated was a domestic-related dispute.
The Muscatine Police Department identified the suspected shooter as Ryan Willis McFarland, 52, of Muscatine.
Officers received a report of a shooting just after noon and responded to a home, where they found four people with gunshot wounds. All four were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
McFarland had left the residence before officers arrived. Officials found him shortly after on a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge, where he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He received medical aid but was pronounced dead, according to police.
Detectives later found another man dead from an apparent gunshot wound at a different residence. A further search led officers to a business, where they found a sixth victim, also dead.
“Preliminary findings indicate the shootings stemmed from a domestic-related dispute,” the Muscatine Police Department said in a statement. “All victims are believed to be family members of the deceased suspect.”
Police did not release the names or ages of the victims. The investigation remains ongoing.
