Crews from Beacon Professional Firefighters IAFF L-3490 responded Saturday to the intersection of Ferry and Beekman Street in the Hudson Valley city for what the union described as a call “not for a fire or medical emergency but to rescue a baby deer trapped in the storm drain.”

The union posted about the rescue on social media, along with photos from the scene. The images show a firefighter descending a ladder into the storm drain to reach the fawn and carry it back to the surface.

Officials said the baby deer was reunited with its mother. The mother was seen waiting near the scene of the rescue, according to the union’s account.

Beacon is a city of roughly 14,000 residents in Dutchess County, N.Y., about 60 miles north of New York City along the eastern bank of the Hudson River. The rescue took place in the city’s downtown area, where Ferry and Beekman streets intersect.
