A pickup truck carrying 15 people fell into a river in southwest China’s Guangxi region on Saturday, leaving one person dead and nine others missing as crews searched through Sunday, state media reported. The truck plunged while crossing a low-water bridge in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, authorities said, and at least five people were rescued.

According to the report carried by state media, the truck was transporting workers to a sweet potato farm. The vehicle went into the river during the crossing, and the accident left one worker dead and nine people unaccounted for, the report said.

Authorities continued search and rescue efforts Sunday for the remaining nine missing people. State-run broadcaster CCTV reported that more than 700 rescuers were deployed, using underwater sonar devices as well as dinghies and drones to search for the truck and those missing.

CCTV said heavy rainfall in the area had caused torrents and increased the risk of landslides. Officials said those conditions made rescue operations more difficult as crews worked around the river and bridge site.

The AP report cited state media accounts that described the incident and the response, with rescue operations continuing as authorities assessed conditions after the truck fell from the bridge.
