The attack occurred in Tehuitzingo in east-central Puebla, where Mexican authorities said gunmen killed at least 10 people on Sunday. The Puebla public security agency said the victims were six men, three women and a child, and that all were shot in the early hours of the day. The agency did not provide details on suspects.
Federal officials have opened an investigation into the killings, according to the report. Local authorities did not say whether there were any suspects in the attack.
The incident comes as central Mexico has seen a surge in cartel violence that has pushed many families to flee their homes. In the report, officials said the violence has forced between 800 and 1,000 families to leave.
Puebla state has also recently seen other deadly incidents, including a separate attack in February in Huehuetlán El Grande that killed six people. The report also cited days later killings in Puebla’s capital after an attack on a vehicle, where three people died.
As of Sunday, Puebla Gov. Alejandro Armenta had not commented on the incident, the report said.
