Gunmen killed at least 10 people, including a child, in the town of Tehuitzingo in Mexico’s Puebla state early Sunday, according to a statement from Puebla’s public security agency. The victims were six men, three women, and a child, all shot during the attack, authorities said.

Federal officials have taken over the investigation, the agency added. Local authorities did not say whether any suspects had been identified. Governor Alejandro Armenta has not yet issued a public response to the incident.

The killings extend a pattern of cartel-related bloodshed in central Mexico. In February, six people were killed in the Puebla town of Huehuetlán El Grande. Days later, three people died in an attack on their vehicle in Puebla’s capital, Puebla City.

The recent violence has driven between 800 and 1,000 families from their homes in the central region, authorities have reported. The Associated Press first reported the Tehuitzingo attack on Sunday.
