Austin police said three young people were in custody following a weekend spate of shootings across the city that left four people injured. City officials said the incidents took place from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning and included attacks on multiple targets, including two fire department stations.

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the suspects traveled around the city in stolen vehicles and fired during a string of robberies and shootings. Davis said at least two of the suspects fired at two fire stations, apartment buildings and houses during the weekend.

Mayor Kirk Watson said investigators were working to determine a reason for the shootings. Watson said there was “no specific motive that has been identified,” adding that the actions “appear to be random,” as officials briefed the public on the case.

Police said two boys, ages 15 and 17, were apprehended after they were pulled over in a stolen car and attempted to run. Davis said a third person who had been in the car also ran and was detained Sunday night at a gas station in Manor, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Austin.

Authorities said the firearm used in the shootings had been stolen by the 15-year-old, and Davis said the 17-year-old was wanted for a separate firearm theft. Investigators also said the suspects stole at least four vehicles as they moved through the city.

City officials ordered residents of a large part of the southern area of Austin to shelter in place on Sunday while police searched for the suspects. Officials said the order was later lifted after two suspects were taken into custody.

Davis said four victims were taken to hospitals, including one person with critical injuries. The arrests followed at least 10 random shootings reported over the weekend, with officials describing the episode as an ongoing investigation as they sought to understand what drove the attacks.

As covered in 2026-05-17, authorities reported that teens were in custody after the weekend shootings and that the investigation would continue tracking the case as officials assessed the motive.
