Two people died when a small plane crashed into a residential home in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, igniting a fire that sent a thick column of black smoke visible for blocks, the Akron Fire Department said in a news release. The crash occurred shortly before 4 p.m. local time.
The fire department confirmed that the two occupants of the aircraft were found dead at the scene. No injuries were reported inside either the home that was struck or a second house that was evacuated as a precaution, officials said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was a Piper PA-28. Video circulating on the social platform X appeared to capture the aftermath, showing heavy smoke rising from the neighborhood and flames near the ground, though the aircraft itself was not visible in the footage.
Authorities have not released the identities of the two people killed, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
