The Akron Fire Department said two people inside a small plane were found dead after the aircraft crashed into a home Thursday afternoon, then exploded into flames, in a residential area of Akron. The department said the crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. and that the aftermath prompted evacuations.

The fire department said there were no immediate reports of injuries inside the home where the plane crashed. It said the home and another nearby house had to be evacuated.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a Piper PA-28.

After the crash, video circulating on X appeared to show a thick plume of black smoke rising above the neighborhood, with flames visible at the base of the smoke as it climbed over nearby homes.
