A U.S. Air Force training jet crashed Tuesday in west Alabama, and both pilots ejected safely, military officials said. The incident involved a T-38 Talon II associated with Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, according to officials.

Military officials said the event occurred at noon and characterized it as a “mishap.” They said the cause of the mishap was currently unknown and would be investigated by a Safety Investigation Board, base officials said in a news release.

The base’s public affairs office said it could not provide information about the pilots’ condition other than that they safely ejected. The public information was limited to confirming that outcome while the investigation proceeds.

Columbus Air Force Base is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing, which trains pilots on a variety of aircraft. The T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet trainer, according to information released about the aircraft type.
