About a dozen people were taken to hospitals after a boat explosion near Miami on Saturday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said. The incident involved a charter boat in Biscayne Bay near Haulover Sandbar, where officials said a blast erupted on board.
Fire rescue said its crews responded during the afternoon with more than two dozen rescue units and encountered multiple patients needing medical attention. The agency said it transported 11 people to hospitals, but neither Fire Rescue nor the state agency provided details about the condition of the injured.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission provided preliminary information that the blast occurred while the charter boat was operating near Haulover Sandbar. The U.S. Coast Guard was among the federal crews that responded to the incident, according to the preliminary reports.
Florida’s Conservation Commission said an investigation is underway to determine what caused the explosion. No information was released about the circumstances leading up to the blast or about the extent of injuries beyond the number transported to hospitals.
