A charter boat exploded Saturday afternoon in Biscayne Bay near Haulover Sandbar, injuring 11 people, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue agency said in a statement. More than two dozen rescue units responded to the scene and “encountered multiple patients requiring medical attention,” according to the agency.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the vessel was a charter boat in the bay when the blast erupted on board, based on preliminary information. The agency did not release the names of the operator or passengers, nor any details about what may have caused the explosion.
Neither the fire rescue agency nor the state conservation commission provided information about the condition of those who were injured. The 11 people were transported to hospitals, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
The U.S. Coast Guard was among the crews that responded to the incident. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said an investigation is underway.
