NABLUS, West Bank — A Palestinian man was killed and four others were wounded, including a 12-year-old boy shot in the shoulder, when Israeli soldiers conducted a military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Nablus on Sunday, the Palestinian Red Crescent and the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
The dead man was identified as Nayef Firas Ziad Samaro, 26. His body was brought to the local hospital where his wife was in labor, and the Health Ministry said she learned of his death while giving birth. The Red Crescent said five people were hit by gunfire during the Israeli operation. The 12-year-old’s condition was not immediately specified beyond the shoulder wound.
The Israeli military, in a statement, said its forces responded to a confrontation in the Nablus area in which “terrorists” threw rocks toward soldiers. Soldiers fired, the statement said, and “several hits were identified.” Witnesses told the Associated Press that the raid took place as schools were letting out, filling the area with civilians.
Palestinians, rights groups and international observers have warned of worsening violence in the West Bank, where young Palestinian men are being killed with increasing regularity. The broader climate includes arson, vandalism and the displacement of farming communities near Jewish settlements and outposts, they say.
The United Nations humanitarian office said at least 42 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the beginning of 2026, and that armed settlers were responsible for at least 11 of those fatalities.
