Two buses crashed head-on near a Pentagon bus stop on Friday morning in Arlington, Virginia, injuring 23 people, including Defense Department personnel, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency said in a press release. The crash happened shortly before 7:30 a.m., when an Omni Ride bus and a Fairfax Connector transit bus struck each other near the stop, according to the Pentagon agency.
The Pentagon Force Protection Agency said emergency personnel transported 18 of the injured to local hospitals for further medical evaluation, while five were treated at the scene. The agency said 10 of the 23 injured passengers were from the Defense Department.
The Arlington Fire Department confirmed it responded to the crash, but referred questions to the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which is described as the federal law enforcement agency at the Pentagon. The Metro Access Road was closed as officials investigated the accident, and mass transit operations were altered for several hours afterward.
Camera footage from the scene showed the two buses colliding, according to the Associated Press report of the crash. It remained unclear what caused the crash as of the initial reporting.
