A woman reported to authorities that a man doused her with gasoline and set her on fire at her home in Roseboro, North Carolina, and the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were seeking a possible arson suspect. The report came after firefighters and deputies responded Saturday night to a structure fire and found the woman with burns over about two-thirds of her body, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The sheriff’s office said the woman was taken to a trauma center for treatment. The office did not immediately disclose the woman’s condition.
In its statement, the sheriff’s office said the woman told investigators that a man forced his way into her home. The sheriff’s office also said the woman reported that the suspect left the scene on a bicycle.
After consulting with the local prosecutor’s office, the sheriff’s office said it obtained documents accusing a named suspect of first-degree arson and first-degree burglary, along with other charges. Authorities said the person was still at large Sunday afternoon.
Roseboro is a small community about 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Raleigh, the state capital.
