Offset, a rapper widely known for his work with the Atlanta hip-hop trio Migos, was shot Monday outside the Seminole Hard Rock casino in Hollywood, Florida, as law enforcement investigated who may have been responsible, according to police. Authorities said the shooting followed a fight at the casino and that they detained two people. Police also said Offset was in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday and that investigators were working to identify others involved.

The incident has put the spotlight back on Offset’s music history and on how quickly legal and public attention can move when major hip-hop figures are hurt. The shooting also comes after other high-profile killings involving artists in recent years, including Takeoff’s fatal shooting in 2022.

Born Kiari Kendrell Cephus, Offset first became known as one-third of Migos, a group whose breakthrough helped define modern trap’s sound for much of the last decade. Migos were described as two-time Grammy-nominated and as widely influential, including for their rapid-fire triplet flow. The cluster of hits included their 2013 breakthrough “Versace,” followed by multi-platinum singles such as “Bad and Boujee,” which reached No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, as well as songs including “Stir Fry,” “Narcos,” and “T-Shirt.”

After Migos, Offset pursued solo projects, releasing three full-length albums. In 2019, he released “Father of Four,” and in 2023 he released “Set It Off,” which he described to The Associated Press at the time as a way to “bring rap back” in a genre he said has been led by rappers who sing. His 2025 album “Kiari” was described by Offset as reflective of “me, for what I am, and recognizing who I am,” in remarks he made to AP. Offset also told AP that he felt people could “get lost in trying to please other people” and described “Set It Off” as “my rebellion. My rebellion album.”

His public profile has also long included his relationship with Cardi B. The pair were secretly married in September 2017 in Atlanta. In 2024, Cardi B announced that she filed for divorce, and the couple has three children: 7-year-old daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus, 4-year-old son Wave Set Cephus, and a toddler named Blossom. The two also produced songs together, including “Clout,” “Jealousy” and “Icey,” and Cardi B later asked the courts for primary custody and for child support from Offset in August 2024.

The latest investigation into a shooting involving Offset also echoes previous violence tied to Migos. More than three years ago, Takeoff, another Migos member and Offset’s cousin, was shot and killed at a Houston bowling alley. Police said at the time that Takeoff was an innocent bystander who was shot after a disagreement over a dice game, and AP reported that Takeoff’s death was among a series of fatal shootings involving hip-hop stars including Nipsey Hussle, Pop Smoke, PnB Rock and Young Dolph.

After Takeoff’s death, Quavo sought to turn attention to gun violence by holding a summit in 2024, according to AP reporting, and the group’s tragedy underscored how often high-profile artists face public scrutiny when violence erupts. Offset has been a solo artist for years before Takeoff’s death, with his solo releases spanning multiple eras of his career even after the group’s chapter closed following Takeoff’s killing.

In Hollywood, Florida, police said they were still working to identify others involved after detaining two people and determining that a fight at the casino preceded the shooting. MSI previously reported details of Offset’s condition and authorities’ follow-up after the shooting on April 8.

In the near term, investigators’ next steps appear to focus on expanding the scope of who was present and who may have fired, beyond the two people detained after the fight. For Offset’s fans, the attention also continues to center on his body of work—from Migos’ breakout era to his solo albums—and on the personal life that has increasingly intersected with major public events, including his relationship with Cardi B.
