A Cape Air flight departing Nantucket, Massachusetts, returned safely after part of the aircraft’s main cabin door opened shortly after takeoff, according to the airline. The crew made the decision to turn back to Nantucket Memorial Airport after the incident, Cape Air said.
A Cape Air spokesperson told news outlets that the aircraft remained stable and continued operating normally after the door opened. The spokesperson also said no injuries were reported, and that the flight landed without further incident.
A passenger video shared on Instagram appears to show the upper portion of the cabin door ajar during the flight, with open sky and ocean visible through the gap. The footage was filmed from inside the small aircraft and shows the door frame and window area partially open while passengers remain seated nearby.
Cape Air said the flight had departed Nantucket Memorial Airport on Monday when the upper portion of the main cabin door opened. After the crew returned the plane, the airline said the aircraft was taken out of service for evaluation.
The island of Nantucket sits roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) off Massachusetts’ southern coast and is a popular summer destination accessible primarily by air and ferry. Cape Air said it is following established safety procedures and will take any necessary actions based on its findings.
