Offset, a former member of the hip-hop group Migos, was shot outside a Florida casino in Hollywood just north of Miami on Monday, and law enforcement is investigating who may have carried out the attack. Police said two people were detained and the shooting followed a fight at the Seminole Hard Rock in the city, according to information released as the investigation continued. Offset was in stable condition at a hospital, investigators said Tuesday as they worked to identify others who may have been involved.
As details emerge, the case has put a spotlight on the rapper’s background, from his rise as part of Migos to his solo releases and his long-running public profile connected to Cardi B. Offset’s full name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, and he has been known as one-third of Migos, a group that helped popularize what the Associated Press described as the trio’s rapid-fire triplet flow and an often-imitated delivery associated with trap’s broader trajectory.
Migos first made a mainstream name with the 2013 hit “Versace,” and the group later scored several multi-platinum singles, including “Bad and Boujee,” which reached No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as tracks such as “Stir Fry,” “Narcos,” and “T-Shirt.” The group released four full-length albums across their run, and that chapter effectively closed after Offset’s cousin Takeoff—also a member of Migos—was shot and killed in 2022.
In the years following Takeoff’s death, Offset continued as a solo artist. The Associated Press reported that Offset has released three full-length albums as a solo act, including “Father of Four” in 2019 and “Set It Off” in 2023. In an Associated Press interview last year, Offset described “Set It Off” as a way “to ‘bring rap back’,” in a genre that has been shaped by performers who sing, and he also told the outlet that the album’s song “Set It Off” was “a freedom.”
Offset also described “Kiari,” his more recent album released in 2025, as reflecting “me, for what I am, and recognizing who I am.” In the same Associated Press-reported remarks, he said, “I feel like sometimes you could get lost in trying to please other people and trying to do what they want you to do,” adding, “So, this is like my rebellion. My rebellion album.”
Offset’s personal life has likewise drawn public attention, including his relationship with Cardi B. The Associated Press reported that the two were secretly married in September 2017 in Atlanta. Cardi B announced in 2024 that she filed for divorce, and the Associated Press said they have three children: a 7-year-old daughter, Kulture Kiari Cephus; a 4-year-old son, Wave Set Cephus; and a toddler, Blossom. The pair have also produced songs together, including “Clout,” “Jealousy” and “Icey,” and in August 2024, Cardi B asked the courts for primary custody of the children and sought child support from Offset.
The shooting also revives attention on violence that has touched members of Migos and other prominent artists. More than three years ago, Takeoff was shot and killed at a Houston bowling alley, and police at the time said he was an innocent bystander in a shooting that followed a disagreement over a dice game. The Associated Press also noted that Takeoff’s death was among a string of fatal shootings involving hip-hop stars, including Nipsey Hussle, Pop Smoke, PnB Rock and Young Dolph.
In 2024, Quavo, the third member of Migos, sought to turn Takeoff’s death into a push for change by holding a summit against gun violence, according to the Associated Press account. With investigators still working to identify others involved in Offset’s shooting, further updates may clarify whether the attack is connected to the fight police described at the Seminole Hard Rock. MSI previously reported that Offset was stable after the shooting outside the casino.
