The Associated Press said the wave of fatal crashes unfolded amid ongoing pressure from some policing experts to reduce or restrict high-speed car chases. The report said such pursuits result in hundreds of fatalities nationwide each year, even as agencies differ on when officers should continue chasing a suspect. The latest incidents highlight how quickly a pursuit can escalate into a deadly crash.

In Alabama, the AP reported that the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s highway patrol was pursuing a driver on a rural road in Pike County late Friday night when the crash occurred. Amanda Wasden, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an email Sunday that the pursued car left the road and hit a tree and that no other vehicles were involved. Wasden said the crash remained under investigation and that no additional information was available, including what prompted the pursuit.

Wasden said the driver and two passengers were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the sedan. She said one of the passengers was 17 years old, and that all four people in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The AP reported that the agency did not state why the trooper was pursuing the vehicle.

The AP also described a fatal pursuit case in Fort Worth, Texas. It said Fort Worth Police were pursuing a car on Interstate 35 that was driving without headlights when the vehicle hit multiple other vehicles and then crashed. The Fort Worth Police Department said the crash killed the driver.

In southern California, the AP reported that the Pomona Police Department was pursuing a fleeing domestic violence suspect when his car hit another vehicle, killing the couple inside. The AP said KCBS-TV reported that the two victims were days away from the birth of their child, citing the circumstances of the crash.

The AP further reported another California incident involving a pursuit of a stolen U-Haul truck. It said the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported that deputies attempted to stop the truck before it slammed into an SUV, killing the SUV’s driver and critically injuring the driver’s three passengers. The AP said deputies’ attempts and the crash details came from the sheriff’s department’s statement and follow-up reporting.

The AP report placed the incidents within a broader national debate over pursuit policies. It said a 2023 report from the Police Executive Research Forum, a policing standards think tank, called for officers to curb car chases unless a violent crime has been committed and the suspect poses an imminent threat. The report also noted an increase in fatalities and an increase in pursuits by some departments, including Houston and New York City.

As agencies consider how to balance officer safety and the pursuit of suspects, the AP said the recent crashes added fresh examples of how pursuits can end with deaths.
