Vehicle struck revelers during a Lao New Year parade on Saturday in rural Louisiana, injuring people along the parade route near New Iberia, authorities said. Video shared online showed multiple people on the ground as firefighters tended to a person trapped beneath the vehicle, which later came to rest in a ditch along the route.
The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office said the crash hurt about 15 people, and some injuries were serious, according to the sheriff’s office. In a preliminary assessment, the sheriff’s office said it did not see indications the incident was deliberate.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, this does not appear to be an intentional act,” Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Rebecca Melancon said. She spoke after authorities responded to the incident during the annual celebration.
Louisiana State Police said the driver was 57 and lived in Jeanerette. The state police said the driver appeared impaired when officers arrived and later tested positive for a high blood alcohol level.
State police said they charged the driver with impaired driving, negligent and careless driving, and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. Authorities said the driver was arrested quickly after the crash.
Acadian Ambulance, a private ambulance company, said on social media that it responded to the emergency around 2:30 p.m. The company said it sent 10 ambulances and a helicopter to aid injured people, and it said two patients were airlifted.
The parade was part of a three-day New Year celebration set in Lanxang Village, a Laotian neighborhood near New Iberia with hundreds of families, near the grounds of Wat Thammarattanaram. The festival includes Southeast Asian food, live music, a parade and other family-friendly activities that attract thousands each year.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry issued a statement about the crash, saying “Sharon and I are praying for all those affected, and are grateful for the first responders who have responded to the scene.” The festival’s organizers said on Facebook that they were “profoundly saddened” by the incident and said they were praying for victims and their families.
Organizers said they canceled afternoon and evening events, while planning to hold religious services on Sunday, according to their statement.---
