Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police announced Tuesday that it had arrested two suspects in the shooting of a U.S. Park Police officer who was targeted while driving in an unmarked vehicle. The arrest announcement followed an attack that occurred Monday evening in Washington, near the city’s border with Maryland, authorities said.
The suspects, identified by Metropolitan Police as Darren Foster, 21, and Asheile Foster, 22, face a charge of assault on a federal police officer (gun), according to the department’s statement. Metropolitan Police said the shooting involved an officer investigating an incident in the Park Police’s jurisdiction.
U.S. Park Police Chief Scott Brecht said during a press briefing that the officer was working on an investigation when two gunmen fired at him multiple times as he drove by. Brecht said the shooting happened while the officer was driving in the neighborhood near the Maryland border.
Metropolitan Police said the officer drove away from the gunfire and was later medevacked to a local hospital. The officer’s name was not disclosed by law enforcement.
Jeffery Carroll, Washington’s interim police chief, told reporters Monday that the officer was targeted and that it was possible the gunmen knew he was a police officer. Carroll made the remarks as the investigation into the shooting began.
A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter was under active investigation, said the officer was shot in the shoulder. The official also said the officer was released from the hospital Tuesday.
Federal officials assisted in the investigation, Metropolitan Police said.
