ISTANBUL — A natural gas explosion in Istanbul’s central Fatih district brought down two residential buildings on Sunday, leaving one person dead and 10 others injured, according to the Istanbul Governor’s office.
Rescue and search teams worked at the site after local police secured the surrounding area. The governor, Davut Gul, visited the explosion scene and later checked on survivors at the hospital, the office said.
The Governor’s office said rescue personnel pulled out 10 injured people who were hospitalized, including one patient in critical condition. Officials did not detail the circumstances behind the explosion.
One of the collapsed buildings had two stories, while the other was a single structure, according to the report.
Workers and firefighters continued search-and-rescue efforts at the site as authorities assessed the damage in Fatih, a central district on the European side of Istanbul.
The incident’s toll and the condition of survivors were described in the governor’s statement as the response unfolded.
