An Iranian man and a Romanian woman have been charged after they tried to enter a naval base in Scotland that is home to Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines, Police Scotland said Saturday. Police said the pair will appear at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday.

Police said the two were detained Thursday after attempting to enter HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane. The base is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Glasgow, and it is home to the core of the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, including vessels that carry nuclear weapons.

As is customary in Scotland, police said they would not release the suspects’ names or the charges they face before the court hearing. Police said the man is 34 and the woman is 31.

Faslane is also described as the base that supports Britain’s nuclear deterrent. Britain has been a nuclear power since the 1950s, and since the 1990s its nuclear deterrent has consisted of four Royal Navy submarines armed with Trident missiles.
