Boston transit police said a man wielding a butcher knife threatened a bus driver and tried to slash tires at the Forest Hills station in Jamaica Plain on Friday, setting off a police response that left officers and the suspect injured. The station—serving bus, train and subway connections—drew multiple police cars and ambulances as transit officers moved in shortly after receiving a radio call about the man late Friday morning, authorities said.

Richard Sullivan, superintendent of police for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, said transit officers acted quickly after the call. Sullivan said the man tried to slash bus tires and threatened to stab the bus driver before officers took him into custody.

Sullivan said a struggle ensued in which the suspect tried to grab an officer’s gun. Sullivan said the gun went off during the struggle, but no one was shot or stabbed.

Sullivan said two male transit officers and a Boston police officer were injured, along with the suspect. Sullivan also said Boston EMS reported six people were taken to the hospital from the station, while he said he was not aware of the other two people also taken to care.

The incident disrupted service at the transit facility. The station’s upper busway was shut down around 11:15 a.m., with service rerouted to another part of the station.
