The New York City Police Department suspended an officer assigned to security at Gracie Mansion after the department said the officer shot a man in the head while off duty, police said Wednesday. The NYPD said the officer was suspended without pay and that the incident is being investigated by the department’s Force Investigation Division.

Police said the shooting took place around 9 p.m. Monday in the Bronx, after the officer interacted with several men about a stolen car. The officer who guards the mayor’s residence and City Hall was not publicly named by police, and the department said the officer had not been arrested or charged with a crime.

The victim was hospitalized in critical condition, according to police. Police did not release the man’s name.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s office referred questions to the police department, a spokesperson for the mayor said, according to the AP report. The city’s official mayoral residence is Gracie Mansion, located near City Hall.

In the area where the shooting occurred, bar manager Ada Gomez said one of the establishment’s windows was hit and cracked, though she said no one inside was hurt. Gomez said, “Imagine if someone was sitting in that window at that time.”
