Former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, was transferred from the federal police headquarters in Brasília to the DF Star Hospital’s intensive‑care unit on Friday, officials said. Hospital officials reported that his kidney function had worsened but that his overall condition was serious and stable, citing an increase in inflammatory markers since treatment began.
Doctors confirmed the former president is battling bronchopneumonia, a type of pneumonia they said was likely caused by aspiration. Bolsonaro was admitted after experiencing a high fever, low oxygen levels, sweating and chills, symptoms that led to the diagnosis.
Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27‑year sentence for leading a coup attempt in 2023, has previously been hospitalized multiple times since he was stabbed at a campaign event before the 2018 presidential election. His son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is expected to run for president later this year against incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, said his father “is stable, he did not improve, but he is stable.”
Relatives have repeatedly asked Brazil’s Supreme Court to allow Bolsonaro to serve his sentence under house arrest, arguing he has received insufficient medical attention while incarcerated.
Bolsonaro was convicted on charges that include leading an armed criminal organization and attempting the violent abolition of democratic rule. He has denied any wrongdoing.
