Trump’s coalition request
President Trump said he is “demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory, because it is their own territory,” referring to the strategic waterway that links the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. He added that the United States “doesn’t need” the strait because “we get a minimal amount” of oil from it, while noting that China “gets about 90 percent of its oil” through the passage. The president did not specify which nations he had in mind, though he has previously appealed to China, France, Japan, South Korea and Britain.
Iran’s response
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told CBS that Tehran has been “approached by a number of countries” seeking safe passage for their vessels and that a “group of vessels from different countries” had already been allowed through, though he gave no further details. Iran reiterated that the strait remains open to all except the United States and its allies.
U.S. and allied officials weigh in
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told NBC he has been “in dialogue” with some of the nations Trump mentioned and expects China to be a “constructive partner” in reopening the strait. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed the importance of restoring traffic with Trump, and also spoke separately with Canada’s prime minister on the matter. A spokesperson for China’s embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, said all parties share “the responsibility to ensure stable and unimpeded energy supply” and that China would “strengthen communication with relevant parties” for de‑escalation. South Korea’s foreign ministry said it “takes note” of the call and will “closely coordinate and carefully review” the situation with the United States.
Oil‑stock releases aim to calm markets
The International Energy Agency said emergency oil stocks will soon flow to global markets, raising its release plan from 400 million to nearly 412 million barrels. Asian members will release stocks “immediately,” with Europe and the Americas beginning discharges “from the end of March.” Trump suggested that oil prices would “tumble down” once the strait is secured, but he did not address whether his administration is considering selling oil futures to cap the surge.
Escalation in the Gulf
Gulf Arab states, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain, reported fresh missile and drone attacks a day after Iran warned three major UAE ports to evacuate. Dubai’s international airport temporarily halted flights after a drone struck a fuel tank, causing a fire that was contained with no injuries. Iran claimed recent U.S. strikes on Kharg Island were launched from the UAE, offering no evidence; the U.S. Central Command said it had no response to the allegation, and UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash rejected the accusation.
Human toll
Iranian strikes have killed at least a dozen civilians in Gulf countries, most of them migrant workers. Inside Iran, the Red Crescent reported over 1,300 deaths, including 223 women and 202 children. In Israel, Iranian missile fire killed 12 people and injured several others. Thirteen U.S. service members have also been killed, six of them in a plane crash in Iraq last week. Lebanon’s health ministry said the war, sparked by Iran‑backed Hezbollah’s attack on Israel, has claimed at least 820 lives and displaced more than 800,000 residents.
New missile attacks on Israel
Israel’s military confirmed that Iran launched missiles toward the country, using cluster bombs designed to evade some air defenses and scatter sub‑munitions over multiple sites. The strikes hit central Israel and the Tel Aviv area, damaging 23 locations and sparking a small fire. Video from Magen David Adom showed a large crater and shrapnel‑laced apartment building.
