PARIS — French voters participated in municipal elections Sunday, giving political parties an early measure of their electoral strength before the 2027 presidential contest to replace President Emmanuel Macron.

The elections, which included races for mayors and local councils, spanned more than 904,000 candidates in roughly 35,000 communities. While focused on local issues, the vote is scrutinized for national implications, especially regarding the far-right National Rally’s continued rise.

In Paris, projections indicated a potentially tight second-round runoff, with incumbent Socialist Mayor Anne Hidalgo not seeking a third term. In Marseille, the National Rally’s Franck Allisio mounted a strong challenge to left-wing Mayor Benoît Payan. The party also appeared competitive in Toulon and Nice.

National Rally President Jordan Bardella framed the results as a mandate for change, urging supporters to “change the face of many French towns” in the upcoming second round.

“The march of the extreme right to the Élysée isn’t inevitable,” countered Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure, calling for a renewed push to offer hope ahead of the presidential vote.

The elections occur amid external distractions, including the Iran war and U.S. President Donald Trump’s frequent announcements, which analysts said reduced campaign visibility.

Marine Le Pen, the National Rally’s leader and 2027 presidential candidate, faces a five-year ban from public office after a 2025 embezzlement conviction. An appeals court ruling on July 7 could determine her political future.

A second round of voting is scheduled for next Sunday in municipalities where no candidate secured a majority.
