Bolsonaro was taken from prison to DF Star Hospital in Brasilia on Friday, and the hospital said his kidney function has since improved. In its Sunday update, DF Star Hospital said the former president would nonetheless stay in an intensive care unit because of pneumonia.

The hospital said Bolsonaro was admitted with high fever, sweating and chills, and that his inflammatory markers were increased. It also said pneumonia remained the reason for keeping him under intensive care.

Doctors also said Bolsonaro had been given more antibiotics since Saturday. The medical update was released as Bolsonaro remains in custody while serving a 27-year prison sentence.

Bolsonaro, 70, was moved to the DF Star Hospital from the prison where he is serving the sentence for leading a coup attempt in 2023. He has been hospitalized multiple times since being stabbed at a campaign event before the 2018 presidential election.

The former president has asked Brazil’s Supreme Court to allow him to carry out his sentence under house arrest, according to the hospital update. His family and allies have repeatedly made the request.

Bolsonaro was convicted on charges that include leading an armed criminal organization and attempting the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, and he has denied any wrongdoing.
