Summary
Edmunds says hatchbacks can offer more versatility than many sedans, largely because of larger, easier-to-load trunks, and it released a 2026 lineup of what it calls favorite budget-friendly four-door options. In its overview, the site said SUV and crossover demand has often pushed hatchbacks to the side even though many provide frugal fuel economy, nimble handling and useful everyday capacity.
Among its picks, Edmunds highlighted the 2026 Toyota Corolla hatchback as a long-time bargain for shoppers seeking reliable transportation. The site said the four-door Corolla hatchback has 17.8 cubic feet of trunk space, compared with 13.1 cubic feet for the regular Corolla sedan, and it described a base 169-horsepower four-cylinder engine. Edmunds also pointed to the GR Corolla hatchback as a performance variant, describing it as having a 300-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder engine with all-wheel drive.
Edmunds listed a starting price of $25,575 for the 2026 Corolla hatchback, noting that the hybrid version of the Corolla with improved mpg is available but only as a sedan. The site framed the Corolla’s mix of everyday practicality and standard features as a core part of its value proposition.
For Kia, Edmunds cited the 2026 K4 hatchback as a new arrival for the model year with a sportier look. It said the hatchback gives shoppers more cargo advantage than the K4 sedan, offering 22.2 cubic feet of space behind its rear seats, and it listed three trims: EX, GT-Line and GT-Line Turbo.
Edmunds said the EX and GT-Line use a 147-horsepower four-cylinder engine, while the GT-Line Turbo comes with a turbocharged 190-horsepower engine. It also singled out what it called the K4 hatchback’s “outstanding five-year bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage,” and listed a starting price of $26,235.
Edmunds said the 2026 Mazda 3 hatchback stands out for its styling and interior, describing it as having distinctive European-like exterior design and a “classy” interior. It said the hatchback delivers 20.1 cubic feet of trunk space and offers a choice of a 186-horsepower four-cylinder engine or an available turbocharged engine good for 250 horsepower, with standard all-wheel drive on the turbo model.
The site added that all-wheel drive is also available with the base engine, while describing a potential drawback: it said the Mazda 3 has a “small back seat” compared with the other hatchbacks in the list. Edmunds set the starting price at $26,785.
Edmunds also included the 2026 Subaru Impreza in the low-cost hatchback category, saying it may not be built for pulses racing but could appeal to drivers looking for practical transportation. It said acceleration is behind that of some rivals, even with the 180-horsepower four-cylinder in the range-topping RS trim, but it emphasized that all versions of the Impreza come with standard all-wheel drive.
The site said the Impreza also offers a roomy cabin and good outward visibility, and it said the hatch area can hold up to 20.4 cubic feet of items. It listed a starting price of $27,790.
On the Honda side, Edmunds described the 2026 Civic as having a reputation for delivering value, while saying that the hatchback version holds an edge over the sedan in both cargo capacity and performance. It said the rear hatch opens to 24.8 cubic feet of trunk volume, and it described the standard four-cylinder engine as performing “dutifully,” with an available hybrid powertrain offering “up to an EPA-estimated 48 mpg combined in city/highway driving.”
Edmunds also pointed to the “wildly quick” Civic Type R and said it has a 315-horsepower engine. The site cautioned that Civic pricing tends to be higher than competitors, and it listed a starting price of $29,090.
Rounding out the list, Edmunds included the Volkswagen Golf GTI, saying this generation has been on sale since the 2022 model year and that a refresh last year brought revised exterior styling and an upgraded infotainment system with a larger touchscreen, along with more standard features. It said the GTI is powered by a 241-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, noting that Edmunds testing highlighted “zippy acceleration,” an upscale interior and 19.9 cubic feet of cargo space.
Edmunds listed the Golf GTI’s starting price at $36,320, and it concluded by reiterating that “SUVs get all the glory — and more sales” but that hatchbacks should not be overlooked in a new-car search.
