A man was taken into custody after driving a van into a security barrier outside the White House early Wednesday, according to the U.S. Secret Service and other authorities.
The Secret Service said the man crashed into the temporary security barrier just before 6:30 a.m., and it said he was arrested immediately by officers from the agency’s uniformed division. The agency said the man’s identity was not released at the time and that investigators were interviewing him.
Officials also reported that local law enforcement responded to the area around the White House following the crash, and that streets near the White House were blocked as Secret Service investigators looked into the incident.
The Secret Service said a police bomb squad was called to the scene. It said the bomb squad checked the vehicle and determined it was safe.
While authorities did not provide additional details about what led to the crash, the Secret Service said criminal charges were pending as investigators continued their work.
