Fire engulfed a bus in the town of Kerzers, west of the Swiss capital, killing at least six people and leaving three others with severe injuries, police said March 10. Police said the fire broke out Tuesday evening and that authorities were investigating how it happened.
Fribourg canton police spokesperson Frederic Papaux said the cause could have involved an unspecified “voluntary act.” He said an investigation was under way.
Authorities said the bus was operated by PostBus, which is affiliated with Switzerland’s national postal service. Images from the scene showed flames tearing through the bus, according to Swiss media coverage of the incident.
A regional government statement said rescue teams noted that the vehicle was “totally engulfed in flames” after they arrived at the scene. Ambulance and helicopter teams then ferried three injured people with severe injuries to hospitals, while two other people were treated on site, police said.
