Ford has recalled nearly 1.74 million vehicles in the United States over software defects that impair rearview camera displays, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced this week. The two recalls cover six Ford and Lincoln models spanning model years 2020 through 2026. NHTSA said both defects could increase crash risk, though Ford reported no known injuries or accidents tied to either recall.
The recalls affect vehicles whose camera systems either fail to display a rear image or show an inverted one when drivers shift into reverse — conditions federal safety regulators say raise the risk of backing collisions. A software fix is available for one group of vehicles; a remedy for the other remains under development.
Overheating component blanks display on Broncos and Edges
An internal component inside the infotainment system of certain 2021-2026 Ford Broncos and 2021-2024 Ford Edges may overheat and shut down, preventing the rearview camera image from appearing when drivers reverse, according to NHTSA documents published this week. That recall covers 849,310 vehicles.
Ford said it will provide a free software update for the affected vehicles’ Accessory Protocol Interface Module. Owner-notification letters are scheduled to be mailed at the end of March, with the fix available at a dealership or through an over-the-air update.
Flipped image affects Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators and Explorers
A separate recall covers 889,950 vehicles — 2020-2022 Ford Escapes and Lincoln Corsairs, and 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers — whose rearview cameras may display a flipped or inverted image while backing up.
A remedy for that defect is still under development, Ford said. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are set to be mailed in the coming months.
No injuries reported; all covered vehicles estimated to have defect
Ford estimated that all vehicles covered by both recalls have the underlying defects. The company said it is not aware of any injuries or accidents tied to either issue, according to NHTSA documents.
Owners can check recall status through the NHTSA website or Ford’s online recall lookup tool using their vehicle identification number, or by calling Ford’s customer service line at 1-866-436-7332.
