A man injured in a Rhode Island ice rink shooting during a youth hockey game last week has died, Pawtucket police said Wednesday, bringing the death toll to three victims in the attack. Gerald Dorgan had been in critical condition after the incident, authorities said.
Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said in a statement that he was “heartbroken” that another person died because of the shooting. He said, “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victim’s family, friends, and all those impacted by this tragic act of violence,” as the investigation continued.
Authorities said Rhonda Dorgan, Gerald Dorgan’s daughter, and her son, Aidan Dorgan, were killed in the same attack. In addition to the deaths, police said Rhonda Dorgan’s mother, Linda Dorgan, and family friend Thomas Geruso were wounded.
Police identified the shooter as Robert Dorgan, 56, and said he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities also said Robert Dorgan went by the names Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano, and that his ex-wife was Rhonda Dorgan and his adult son was Aidan Dorgan.
Officials previously said the shooter was specifically targeting family members, according to the authorities. As covered earlier in the developing case, investigators described a deliberate focus on the family involved in the incident in reporting published Feb. 18.
Law enforcement also credited intervention by people at the rink with helping stop the attack quickly. The authorities said at least three bystanders were able to contain the shooter in the middle of the stands as the crowd fled and ran around them.
