Russia fired 297 drones and 50 missiles at Ukraine on Sunday, killing one person in the Kyiv region, Ukraine’s Emergency Service said. Eight people, including a child, were rescued from under rubble in the suburbs of Kyiv. The barrage struck energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine’s Odesa region, causing fires that were later extinguished.
The attack marks the latest in four years of constant aerial bombardment since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Russia has increasingly targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, leaving civilians without electricity and heating through harsh winter conditions despite ongoing U.S.-led peace efforts.
Attack Details
Ukraine’s Air Force said the overnight barrage included missiles of various types. Of the 347 weapons fired, 307 were shot down or neutralized, the Air Force reported. Fourteen missiles and 23 drones struck their targets across five districts of the Kyiv suburbs and in the village of Putrivka in the Fastiv district, the Air Force said. Three missiles remained unaccounted for.
Emergency first responders worked to rescue people buried under debris in Putrivka. The attack caused damage and fires across the targeted suburbs.
Energy Infrastructure
The strikes on Odesa’s energy infrastructure resulted in significant fires, which were later extinguished, Ukraine’s Emergency Service said. Over four years, Russia has accelerated its targeting of Ukraine’s energy grid, leaving civilians without power and heating as winter approaches, despite ongoing U.S.-led diplomatic efforts.
Explosion in Lviv
An explosion in the western city of Lviv killed one person and injured 25 on Sunday, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The blast was unrelated to the Russian aerial bombardment. One person has been arrested in connection with the Lviv explosion.
Counterattacks and Claims
Russian air defenses reported destroying 86 Ukrainian drones overnight, according to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. According to the ministry and Moscow-installed leader Leonid Pasechnik, a Ukrainian drone hit an oil depot in the Russian-occupied city of Luhansk, injuring a security guard and igniting a fuel tank.
Throughout the war, Ukraine has faced constant aerial attacks and sustained strikes on critical infrastructure. These assaults have compounded economic damage and civilian hardship, though air defense capabilities have strengthened over time. The conflict has evolved from ground combat into a prolonged campaign combining conventional military operations with infrastructure targeting designed to degrade Ukrainian civilian and economic capacity.
