Two people were killed and seven others were wounded in a shooting that erupted around 2:45 a.m. Saturday in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom entertainment district, Police Chief Rick Edwards said. The shooting occurred during an apparent street fight involving at least two shooters, Edwards said.

The incident killed a man and a woman and sent seven others to hospitals with gunshot wounds. Authorities believe the shooting erupted during a confrontation in the entertainment district, with multiple shooters firing into the crowd.

A man and a woman were killed when a shooting erupted early Saturday morning in an entertainment district in Richmond, Virginia, following what authorities described as a street fight. Of the seven others wounded, three men and four women were hospitalized.

Details of the Shooting

Police Chief Rick Edwards said the shooting occurred around 2:45 a.m. in Shockoe Bottom, a historic area known for restaurants and nightlife. The two victims at the scene had each suffered multiple gunshot wounds, Edwards said.

A police officer in the area witnessed “a large commotion” with cars speeding away from the scene. The officer’s observations alerted authorities to the incident.

The sequence of events remained under investigation. Edwards described the incident: “It seemed like a fight started, individuals intervened in that fight, and shots were fired.” He noted that at least two shooters were involved, though he did not immediately specify whether anyone had been arrested or was in custody.

A Birthday Interrupted

The shooting occurred during a birthday celebration in the area. Several family members had gathered for the event, and one of the deceased—a woman—was caught in the crossfire while with her relatives.

Edwards said his department was seeking additional information about the incident. An email requesting further details was sent to Richmond police on Saturday.
