Detroit police were searching for a missing person when they found three men dead inside a home in Detroit, authorities said Thursday. Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the three victims were between 65 and 72 years old and had been killed late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Fitzgerald said the men had been bludgeoned and stabbed. He described what investigators found inside the house, saying the victims were left in a basement area covered in dirty clothing and that one person was covered with a carpet.

Fitzgerald said police were still working to determine a motive. He added that investigators were seeking tips and searching for a suspect as the case unfolded.

In remarks to reporters, Fitzgerald said the man who lived at the location had opened his house to others and that people “come and go.” He also said there had been speculation that drugs were being used at the residence, but that police could not confirm that at the time.

Thomas Barnes, a neighbor, said one of the men was a veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the report. Barnes is president of his block club, which he said had recently changed its name.

Barnes told The Detroit News that the block club is now called Harmony Village.
