A Slovak fugitive who had been on the run for 16 years was arrested in Milan after arriving for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics to support his national ice hockey team, police said Friday. Authorities said the 44-year-old man was sought by Italian authorities over thefts carried out in 2010.

Police said the arrest happened after the man checked into a campsite in the outskirts of Milan on Wednesday. Carabinieri said they were able to track him down following an automatic alert generated from the campsite reception.

After the campsite alert, carabinieri managed to locate and arrest the fugitive, police said. The man was then taken to Milan’s San Vittore prison, where authorities said he is to serve a pending sentence of 11 months and 7 days.

The carabinieri said the fugitive had not been named publicly in connection with the case. Police also said the timing meant he did not make it to the opening game in which Slovakia’s hockey team beat Finland 4-1.

The match was played Wednesday at Milan’s Santagiulia Arena, according to the authorities cited by police. The arrest was announced Friday, with police describing it as the long-sought capture of a person wanted for thefts committed in 2010.
