The decree, which government-run media said was approved Thursday, requires political parties to surrender their assets to the state. Zerbo said draft laws guiding the establishment of future political parties will be submitted to the legislature “as soon as possible.”

Political party activities have long been suspended in Burkina Faso under the junta. The dissolution follows a pattern of measures that activists say have targeted civic freedom and opposition forces since military authorities took power in the 2022 coup.

Burkina Faso is among a growing number of countries in West and Central Africa experiencing a surge in military coups and delays to the restoration of democratic rule. Since taking power in 2022, the junta’s military leaders have launched sweeping reforms, including postponing elections that were expected to restore civilian rule and dissolving the country’s independent electoral commission.
