Aircraft carrier arrives as tensions with Iran remain high
The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and three accompanying U.S. warships have arrived in the Middle East as tensions with Iran remain high, U.S. Central Command said Monday.
Central Command said on social media that the carrier and its accompanying warships are “currently deployed to the Middle East to promote regional security and stability.” It said the strike group was in the Indian Ocean and not in the Arabian Sea, which borders Iran.
The deployment is expected to bring thousands of additional U.S. service members to the region, which has not had a U.S. aircraft carrier since the USS Gerald R. Ford was ordered in October to sail to the Caribbean as part of a pressure campaign on then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Trump signals “just in case” deployment
Trump told reporters last week that the ships were sent to the region “just in case,” adding, “We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it.”
The AP report linked the carrier’s arrival to Trump’s earlier warnings about military action tied to Iran’s crackdown on protesters.
Trump had threatened military action if Iran carried out mass executions of prisoners or killed peaceful demonstrators during a crackdown on protests that began in late December.
Activist toll vs. official figure
Activists told a higher toll for the crackdown, saying at least 5,973 people have been killed and more than 41,800 detained. The official Iranian death toll is far lower, with Iran’s government listing 3,117 dead.
More recently, Trump appeared to step back from possible action, claiming that Iran had halted the hangings of 800 detained protesters. The report said Iran’s top prosecutor called the claim “completely false,” and Trump did not elaborate on where he obtained the information.
Trump links airstrike threat to planned executions
While the deployment underscores that U.S. forces remain positioned for a possible escalation, the AP report said Trump continued to keep his options open.
On Thursday aboard Air Force One, he said his threatened military action would make last year’s U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites “look like peanuts” if Iran proceeded with planned executions of some protesters.
What the strike group carries and the wider force picture
The aircraft carrier hosts multiple squadrons of aircraft, including F-35 Lightning II fighter jets and F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets. The destroyers bring with them hundreds of missiles, which the report said could include dozens of Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.
In addition to the carrier and shipboard hardware, the U.S. military said the Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet now has a presence in the region.
The report also cited analysts tracking flight activity who have noticed dozens of U.S. military cargo planes heading to the region.
Similar deployment pattern last year
The report said the activity is similar to last year, when the U.S. moved in air defense hardware, including a Patriot missile system, in anticipation of an Iranian counterattack following the bombing of three key nuclear sites. It said Iran launched over a dozen missiles at Al Udeid Air Base days after those strikes.
