The deaths span from July through January and involved federal officers opening fire, people struck by vehicles while fleeing, and one farmworker who fell during an ICE raid. Federal authorities have brought no charges against any officers involved in the deaths.
At least six people have died during the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement campaign, with videos contradicting federal accounts of at least two of the deaths.
Fatal Shootings
The most recent death was Alex Pretti, 37, a Minneapolis nurse and U.S. citizen. A Border Patrol officer shot Pretti on Jan. 24 as he stood with his hands holding only a phone, videos showed. Federal authorities initially described Pretti as an armed agitator, a characterization that prompted Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to call the federal comments “despicable.”
Pretti was permitted to possess a handgun in Minnesota. In video of the shooting, an officer appears to pull a gun from Pretti’s waist and step away before opening fire.
Renee Good, 37, a Minneapolis resident and U.S. citizen, was shot by an ICE officer on Jan. 7. Videos showed her turning the steering wheel of her Honda Pilot away from officer Jonathan Ross when he opened fire. Before the shooting, she said, “I’m not mad at you.”
Trump administration officials have defended Ross’s actions, claiming his life was at risk. The U.S. Justice Department declined to share information about the shooting with state authorities.
Silverio Villegas González, 38, a line cook from Mexico, was fatally shot by ICE agents during a traffic stop on Sept. 12 in suburban Chicago. The Department of Homeland Security said Villegas González was in the country illegally and had evaded arrest by dragging an officer with his vehicle.
Yet local police videos showed the agent walking around and describing his injuries as “nothing major.” Homeland Security said the death remains under investigation.
Deaths During Apprehension and Flight
Jaime Alanis, 57, a farmworker from Mexico, fell from a greenhouse roof and broke his neck during an ICE raid on July 10 at Glass House Farms in Camarillo, California. He fell approximately 30 feet and died two days later at a hospital.
His relatives said Alanis had worked at the farm for a decade and sent his earnings to his wife and daughter in Mexico. Homeland Security claimed Alanis was never in custody and was not being chased by immigration authorities.
Roberto Carlos Montoya Valdez, 52, of Guatemala, died after being hit by an SUV while crossing a freeway on Aug. 14 in Monrovia, California. Police said ICE agents were conducting enforcement operations when Montoya Valdez fled to Interstate 210 and was hit while running across the eastbound lanes. Homeland Security said Montoya Valdez was not being pursued when he ran.
On Oct. 23, Josué Castro Rivera, 24, of Honduras, was hit by a pickup truck on Interstate 264 in Norfolk, Virginia, as he tried to escape authorities during a traffic stop. His brother said Castro Rivera was heading to a gardening job with three passengers when ICE officers pulled over the vehicle. Homeland Security said Castro Rivera had resisted heavily and fled during a targeted, intelligence-based operation.
