Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance announced January 20 they are expecting their fourth child, a son due in late July. The couple shared the news in a social media post.
The expected son will join their three other children: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. Vance, 41, and his wife, 40, said both mother and baby were doing well.
Vance has made promoting higher U.S. birth rates a central focus of his political career since launching his 2021 Senate campaign in Ohio. As vice president, he continues to emphasize that theme.
In their announcement, the couple expressed particular gratitude for military doctors and staff members.
“During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children,” they said in a statement.
Years of Advocacy on Birth Rates
Vance’s political career has centered on the issue of declining birth rates. When launching his 2021 U.S. Senate campaign in Ohio, he repeatedly voiced concern about the demographic trend. As vice president, he has continued that message with increasing emphasis.
At a 2025 March for Life speech, Vance was direct: “I want more babies in the United States of America.”
The White House echoed that theme in response to the Vances’ announcement. The administration reposted their news on social media and stated that President Donald Trump’s administration is “the most pro-family administration in history.”
Rare in U.S. History
Children born to U.S. leaders while in office remain exceptionally rare throughout American history. One documented exception was President Grover Cleveland, whose wife Frances gave birth to their second child in 1893 during his second term.
Expanding Families in the Trump Administration
The Vances are not alone among Trump administration officials in announcing a growing family. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, 28, announced in December that she is expecting a baby girl in May.
